Miracle: First Lunge In Ring

Good morning this is Will Faerber from Art2Ride and today we are lunging Miracle for the first time in an actual ring. We lunged him two days in a round pen with a wall to help us out a little bit.

Today when we brought him out, he was a little fractious when we started, but it only took him about five minutes to settle down. Notice we don’t have any tack on him whatsoever and we are just lunging him in a halter. I just want him to get the idea of going around in a circle. Over the next few weeks, we will start adding tack: surcingle and then a saddle. Of course we will not ride the horse until he has quieted his mouth. We will start with the bridle next time.

As you can see in the video, this is quite good for him. Notice how he is already stretching, how easy it is to get horses to stretch. This is basically a green horse, his owner rescued him two years ago from being abused and has mostly spent that time just letting him settle down a bit. He is actually a pretty nice mover. It is going to be a lot of fun to bring him along. No one knows what breed he is, he was just a horse tied to a fence when our client Abigail bought him from a man. Look how beautifully he is beginning to lengthen that long neck. He moves very light and gets his front end off the ground quite easily. I think this horse is going to be one that surprises everybody and will live up to his name, Miracle.

Once again, this is Will Faerber from Art2Ride and we will give you another update on Miracle in about a week.

I wonder how long Will I longe My Horse in walk and trott?
    Sorry for bad spelling.

If you are doing it correctly, the amount of time it takes to lunge will become shorter and shorter until you are getting it done in twenty minutes or less. Never lunge a horse for over 45 min and never run them on the lunge if you can avoid it, that is, don’t race them around or canter endlessly. The faster the horse goes, the more chance of injury.

How do I reward my horse for stretching down on the lunge line? Is it something they just naturally settle into or can I encourage it?

Join me as I post weekly blogs covering many topics relating to Classical Foundation Training. I have intentionally left out the word "dressage" because many people have a negative association with the prevalent "crank and spank" approach or that it is a sport for only those who are afraid to jump.

Dressage as it is meant to be is an understanding of how to best optimize a horse's movement and ability to carry a rider, surely a benefit for any horse, any discipline. It is also important in maintaining your horse's safety, soundness and sanity.
