Will Faerber’s Book Club: If Horses Could Speak

Hi this is Will Faerber from Art2Ride and and I am here this morning with my buddy Zoolander to do another episode of our book club.

These are a couple of books that should be on every modern rider’s shelf. Starting of with “If Horses Could Speak” which is not a book but a DVD including it’s companion, the book “Tug Of War: Classical Versis Modern Dressage” by Dr. Gerd Heuschman. These books have really saved me a lot of talking because I have been teaching this style of riding of teaching horses to get correct over their back and stretch and relaxation for many many years. I was happy when I found these books because I found a veterinarian who actually explains it. There’s actually an older explanation by a veterinarian which you might want to check out as well named Udo Burger who was a famous German gold medal rider and the team’s veterinarian. Udo burger wrote “The Way to Perfect Horsemanship” and “The Rider Forms The Horse”.

Dr. Gerd Heuschman uses sensors on horses and has done a lot of scientific studies that basically proves how horses should be correctly developed, that is correctly developed by being stretched down and out to let their backs develop correctly in order to support the weight of a rider. Once again, his book is “Tug Of War: Classical Versis Modern Dressage”. Hopefully you can find a copy of this, there was a lawsuit by some of the riders who advocate the rolkur method of training because there were pictures of them even though they were disguised in this and they had a lawsuit in Europe to stop this from being published.

One other book that I wanted to note is “Recognizing The Horse In Pain” by Dr. Joanna Robson who actually is our veterinarian that we work with and is very involved with our H.I.P.P.O.H. Foundation and is also a student of mine as well. She really shows you what some of the issues are that are causing people to have difficulties with their horses and sometimes it’s nothing more than tack. So once again I hope this helps! Her book again is called “Recognizing The Horse In Pain and What you Can Do About It” by Joanna Robson.

This is Will Faerber and Zoolander from Art2Ride and we will see you next time. Thank you!

Join me as I post weekly blogs covering many topics relating to Classical Foundation Training. I have intentionally left out the word "dressage" because many people have a negative association with the prevalent "crank and spank" approach or that it is a sport for only those who are afraid to jump.

Dressage as it is meant to be is an understanding of how to best optimize a horse's movement and ability to carry a rider, surely a benefit for any horse, any discipline. It is also important in maintaining your horse's safety, soundness and sanity.
