In this video we begin the process of educating the young horse. Starting with free lunging in the round pen, we will take you through the steps of teaching the horse the correct response to the trainers body language and voice commands. We will then introduce and develop the horse’s acceptance of tack. Starting with only a lunge line connected to the halter and then introducing the bridle and acceptance of the bit. We will then add the surcingle, the first step in developing acceptance of a saddle and girth. Then we will introduce the horse to contact with the bit by adding long side reins. We will then introduce work in the large arena. We will begin by teaching basic work in hand and then lunging without the aid of the round pen. We will then add acceptance of the saddle and begin the process of mounting.

From the Blog!

Join me as I post weekly blogs covering many topics relating to Classical Foundation Training. I have intentionally left out the word "dressage" because many people have a negative association with the prevalent "crank and spank" approach or that it is a sport for only those who are afraid to jump.

Dressage as it is meant to be is an understanding of how to best optimize a horse's movement and ability to carry a rider, surely a benefit for any horse, any discipline. It is also important in maintaining your horse's safety, soundness and sanity.
