I was very happy to observe the horses working in hand; however, one question that I have is what should one do if, while working in hand , the horse doesn’t go forward and keeps going in circles around the handler?

Answered by Art2Ride Associate Trainer Allison Emily Brunelli: In that case the horse is crowding the handlers space and I would work on basic ground manners by explaining that it needs to step away upon light pressure away from the pressure. That’s just one of several options.

Maja Söderberg The way I see it the horse isn’t respecting/listening to your space or your aids. You can start by teaching the horse to move away from pressure (the whip/your aids). I’d also be really careful with putting any of my hands on the horse. I keep them in the same position but just lifted. This makes it harder for the horse to lean on you since it doesn’t have anything to lean on. I always do that with horses that are in my space and to my knowledge it works really well. You also don’t want to forget to change the position slightly. Going in a circle you are a bit closer to the girtharea than when going in a straight line. (I’m talking about just a few centimeters)
Hope it helps and best of luck 🙂

Ekaterina Krylova I agree: first of all you need to make sure that your horse understands basic commands and aids.. so we teach horse to walk beside us and don’t lean, to stop without pulling or rushing.. we teach horse not to be afraid of whip and to understand whip’s commands.. and after it we teach forward and sideway aids. Forward aid is when whip goes towards quarters and sideway aid is when whip goes to the girth area – the same area where your leg would go while riding.

Carol Kurtz Darlington I suggest watching this short video. You’ll see how Will directs his own energy forward and over, almost as if he is going to step right under the horse’s neck while staying at the shoulder. This should help. Think of your energy as just going right on over there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ax-wWsjZ23s

I like Jana and Lila’s submission as it reminded me so much of my young horse which I am brining along. I am a little further along with this method after trying other things that didn’t work. I would say hang in there the reward is coming if you haven’t already seen it. Would love to see another video of this horse.

I have intentionally left out the word "dressage" because many people have a negative association with the prevalent "crank and spank" approach or that it is a sport for only those who are afraid to jump.

Dressage as it is meant to be is an understanding of how to best optimize a horse's movement and ability to carry a rider, surely a benefit for any horse, any discipline. It is also important in maintaining your horse's safety, soundness and sanity.
